FOUR people are suspected to have contracted the Hepatitis B (HBV) virus in the north eastern district of Kaabong.

The district health officer, Dr. James Kisambu, confirmed reports that this week, six people who had symptoms of the disease were admitted at Karenga Health Centre IV.

However, he said two of them were discharged on Thursday since they had recovered.

"Blood samples of the admitted patients have been sent to the Virus research Institute in Entebbe, for diagnosis," Kisambu said.

Kaabong district neighbours Kitgum which was hit by Hepatitis B last year that left 67 people dead and 4,000 bedridden.

The disease can be prevented by vaccination, health experts say.

Statistics show that Uganda has long been considered to be among the highly endemic countries of sub-Saharan Africa, with more than 8% of the population expected to harbour chronic infection.
