Over 40 persons were diagonised of gastro-enteritis after they were reportedly hit with severe stomach pains from consuming contaminated groundnut oil.

The development has sent fears down the spine of residents of Unguwar Madabo, Adakawa, Unguwar Kan Tudu in Kano State who expressed concern over the selling of contaminated groundnut oil to the public by itinerant traders.

The Head of Environmental and Occupational Health Unit of the Kano State Ministry of Health, Alhaji Jafaru Ahmed Gwarzo, who revealed this, said the oil was being sold by some women who go from house to house with their product.

He further said that the oil company at former Gwawmmaja Masaka Textiles after producing oil, makes sludge which has bad odour, for the production of soap and which some women buy, boil and afterward sells to unsuspecting consumers.

The spokesman for the communities complained that the women have been buying the sludge from the company and some other oil companies in the state.

The chairman of the oil company, Alhaji Sagir, pledged his company's willingness to abide by the directive given by Sarkin Tsafta who instructed them to stop selling the sludge to the shylock women who trade in them.

He also promised to inspect the oil company round the clock for the protection of the health of the public.
