Nigeria's low health indices which has been described as one of the worst in the world is said to be caused by corrupt activities of the Nigerian leaders who are more concerned with enriching themselves than delivering on their promises to the poor.

This assertion was made at the joint end of projects dissemination of ENHANSE and COMPASS at Nicon Luxury Hotel yesterday in Abuja.

Reverend Father George Ehusani of the Church of Assumption Asokoro, who called for an action plan, lamented that most Nigerians were grumbling that the United States agency was leaving because they feel that their leaders have failed them and their source of succor.

Ehusani added that the Nigerian government should be ashamed of itself, because it took a foreign body to expose the evil of its health system and prefer solutions that have proven to be successful.

According to him, the government only pays lip service to its duties, saying "policy makers must put in place policies and structures that cater for the needs of the poor, instead of enriching themselves."

He said, 'the various policies that COMPASS and ENHANSE helped stakeholders to develop should have been developed by the National Planning Commission of the Ministry of National Planning who is supposed to plan long term programmes that is sustainable'.

Earlier, the managing director of Society for Family Health, Mr Bright Ekwerenmadu said if any meaningful development is to be noticed in the health sector then the federal government must as a matter of policy continue to increase their budgetary allocation to the sector.

He said the international community consistentlyy increase their budgetary allocation to programmes in support of the Nigerian government whereas Nigerian government don't really increase their allocation as expected.
